Check this out!

This is a fantastic new book about animals that ties in great with this weeks' storytime theme - going to the zoo! It is an alphabet book with animal names, so it is great for working on two Ready to Read skills: Letter Knowledge (ABC's), and Vocabulary (Words). For more information on Ready to Read skills and great books for kids, check out the Columbus Metropolitan Library's Ready to Read page.

Ready to Read Skill: Print Awareness (Using Books)
Print Awareness means noticing print, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how to follow the words on a page. Some great ways to practice this skill with your child include letting your child hold the book and showing them which way to turn the page, using your finger to follow along with the text on the page, and pointing out words and letters on signs when you are out and about. If you are worried that your child is too young to use books without tearing the pages, try using cloth or board books that are more durable. Don't forget that the library has books that are sturdy enough for all ages!

Ready to Read Skill : Vocabulary (Words)
Vocabulary means knowing the names of things. Knowing many words will help your child recognize written words and understand what he or she reads. Some great ways to work on this skill include talking to your child about what is going on around you, speaking clearly and using short sentences, and pointing out pictures in books when you say certain words. Books we looked at this week that are great for building vocabulary include Peter Rabbit Munch! and Growing Vegetable Soup. Both offer new words for names of manydifferent vegetables and even garden tools.

Meet our Storytime Team!

You and your child have probably noticed that you do not always have the same storyteller when you come to storytime at the Hilltop Branch. We have four great youth services staff members who can assist you in getting your child Ready to Read at the library! Please ask us for book or music suggestions, and for fun ways to practice the 6 pre-reading skills at home.

Remember, you are your child's first teacher!

Ready to Read Skill: Print Motivation (Loving Books)
Print Motivation means being interested in and enjoying books. There are many ways to encourage this skill with your child, but the best way is to make reading fun! Some ways to do this include helping your child choose books to read with you, trying funny voices for the characters in the books, or having your child help you read by saying a repeating phrase. Choosing books that have a pop-up or lift-the-flap feature, like Jazzy in the Jungle and Pop-up Wild Animals, also make reading fun and exciting for your little one. Also, feel free to ask the librarians at the branch you visit for books about topics your child is interested in (for example: trains, frogs, princesses, etc.).
